FILM TRENDS OF THE 1920’s
Americans have been watching a great variety of genres of films throughout the decade. The highest grossing films The Birth of a Nation and The Big Parade happen to be dramas. Films like Charlie Chaplin’s classics The Gold Rush and The Circus are comedies. For the most part however, the most popular films that have made the most money in the past ten years were dramas, several of which are also romances. Many of the popular films this past decade have been silent films, considering that sound is a fairly new invention. Another interesting comparison as of late is that several of the films such as The Birth of a Nation, The Big Parade, and The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are films that are set in a time of war. This could possibly have been due to The Great War that just ended within the past couple of years. Overall, these days Americans are most interested in watching films, silent or not, filled with drama and romance, although they may occasionally be looking for a laugh here and there.
